I killed ispendtoomuch.com after six days. Not because the product was broken, but because I have one rule right now:

1 week. $100 MRR. Or it dies.

It didn't hit $100 MRR, so it died. No drama, just a clear line in the sand.

The Idea

The product connected to Gmail (read-only) and turned purchase confirmation emails into structured spending insights. It showed how much you actually spend online, which stores take most of your money, monthly trends, and SaaS subscriptions over time. It wasn’t a budgeting app; it was clarity from inbox chaos. Clean problem, clear value.

What Happened

I built in public, shared it, talked about it, and pushed it. What I didn’t feel was urgency, strong pull, or that “when can I pay?” energy. That’s the signal I’m looking for. If something truly resonates, you don’t have to convince people, they lean forward. This didn’t have that. Six days was enough to know.

The Constraint

There was also a practical hurdle. To fully launch Gmail sync beyond testing limits, there’s a compliance step involved. It’s not massive, but it’s real. That step only makes sense if the idea is already pulling. You invest in infrastructure when demand earns it. This hadn’t earned it yet, so I didn’t proceed.

What I Learned

Revenue Is the Only Honest Signal

Likes aren’t signal. Comments aren’t signal. Encouragement isn’t signal. Money is signal. If someone pulls out a card in week one, you’re onto something; if they don’t, you probably aren’t.

Urgency > Problem Size

The problem might be real, but if it’s not painful enough right now, people won’t act. Clarity about spending is useful, but it wasn’t urgent. Useful doesn’t equal buy-now.

Compliance Magnifies Weak Ideas

Regulatory or technical hurdles aren’t the enemy, but they expose whether an idea has real pull. If demand is strong, you happily clear the hurdle; if demand is weak, the hurdle feels heavy. The hurdle didn’t kill the idea, the lack of pull did.

Speed Preserves Energy

Dragging a lukewarm idea for three months feels productive. It isn’t. Fast kills protect momentum. Momentum compounds, energy compounds, confidence compounds.

Systems Beat Emotion

Without a rule, I could’ve kept tweaking the landing page, added more features, blamed distribution, or “given it more time.” The rule removed emotion. The rule made the decision.

Why I’m Okay With That

Most indie builders don’t fail because of bad ideas; they fail because they refuse to stop. I’m optimizing for speed and signal. If it hits, double down. If it doesn’t, move.

The System Stays

The rule still stands:

1 week. $100 MRR. Or it dies.

Not because $100 matters, but because it proves someone values it, distribution works, and there’s urgency. No urgency, no scale.

Final Thought

Killing ispendtoomuch.com wasn’t failure. It was alignment. The market didn’t lean forward; the signal wasn’t strong enough. So I moved on, on to the next one.
